ZESCO and POWERCHINA Sign MoUs to Boost Zambia’s Solar Energy Capacity
In a major step towards enhancing Zambia’s renewable energy capacity, ZESCO has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) for the development of solar power projects across the country.
The agreements, signed during a ceremony attended by President Hakainde Hichilema and POWERCHINA Chairman Ding Yanzhang, include three critical initiatives:
1.A Framework Cooperation Agreement for the supply, delivery, and installation of rooftop solar systems in Zambia.
2.An Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) agreement for a 100-megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant at Kariba North.
3.An EPC agreement for another 100-megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant at Kafue Lower.
ZESCO Managing Director Victor Mapani signed on behalf of the utility, while Ma Chen Guanfu, Chairman of Power China International, represented POWERCHINA.
These projects represent a significant advancement in Zambia’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and increase access to clean, renewable power.
President Hichilema emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating, “We are fully aware of the negative impacts of energy insecurity on our economy, hence our resolve and determination to find a lasting solution.”
The two 100-megawatt solar plants at Kariba North and Kafue Lower are poised to significantly enhance Zambia’s grid capacity, improving energy security and reducing the country’s reliance on hydroelectric power.
